ALL ABOUT MARY

Mary Barnard Fitzgerald grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and received a BFA from NSCAD University. She has exhibited in group shows in Windsor, Ontario, and Halifax, including the NSCAD Alumni show in 2015,5 Women/1 Room at the Chase Gallery in2018 and ReView at the Chase Gallery in 2024.Her current paintings are joyful, multicoloured, highly patterned meditations that revisit motifs from her own and the historic past, and that continue to haunt and inspire her. Among these motifs are vintage picture frames, carpeted staircases, gingham fabric and the view of Isle Haute from Advocate Harbour beach in Nova Scotia. She finds mystery and magic in exteriors, interiors and the struggles of the human soul. Her work has been linked by critics to Alice in Wonderland, the Surrealists and M.C. Escher.
